My plan for this evening was to finish writing my Christmas cards but… that just ain’t happening so I might as well update my blog! Earlier this evening, I posted this status update on Facebook and quickly got loads of interesting responses:
Okay, quick survey / confession time: What is one “holiday” song you hate so much that you run to hit “skip” (or to turn down the volume) as soon as it starts? There are many I don’t care for but the one that is like nails on a chalkboard for me is “The Christmas Song” (i.e. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…) GAH!!! Ironically, the song has nothing to do with Christmas (unless you think a reference to Santa counts). The song in its entirety isn’t so bad but the first two pitchy notes are enough to make me cringe/wince every time.
On that note, I thought it would be appropriate to share this little piece I wrote about a dozen years ago. The question is: “If You Were a Christmas Carol. . .Which One Would You Be?”
It may sound like a silly question but it’s not as bad as some of the personality quizzes we see online ad nauseum: “What Breed of Dog Are You?”, “Which TV Mom Are You?” or “What Car Matches Your Personality?”
Seriously, though, as you listen to the same carols over and over again this season, ask yourself which titles best describe your life. The following questions came to mind as I skimmed the titles of some traditional songs. You may or may not agree with my comments (and please note that I am not commenting on the lyrics of the songs—only the titles), but I hope you will at least pause to consider what message your life, your carol, sends out to those who are “listening.”
Away in a Manger — Is Jesus a far-away figure for you, just a little baby lying in a hay-filled manger?
What Child Is This? — Is Jesus unknown to you? Are you seeking Him?
Do You Hear What I Hear? — Are you so intently focused on what God is saying to you that you are eager for others to hear Him as well?
Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus — Do you desire to be close to Jesus? Do you express that to Him?
The Twelve Days of Christmas — Is Christmas something you focus on for only a couple of weeks and then forget about or do you celebrate and give thanks every day for God sending His Son?
O Christmas Tree — At Christmas, are you all caught up with decorations and trimmings? Are your priorities in order?
Silent Night — Are you able to be quiet and reflective of God’s gift or is your holiday full of noise and activity?
O Come, All Ye Faithful — Do you celebrate Christmas because it’s a tradition or because you truly believe in the One whose birth we celebrate? Are you one of His faithful?
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing — Are you ready to listen to the messages God is sending your way?
O Holy Night — At Christmas, are your celebrations holy and worshipful or do you use the occasion to participate in conversations and activities that do not honour the Lord?
How Great Our Joy — Does your relationship with Jesus fill your life with great joy?
Go Tell It On the Mountain — What’s the message you send out to people at Christmas? That you’re excited and stressed about all your festivities and preparations… or does everyone around you know that the birth and life of Jesus is the best gift you’ve ever received?
I love Christmas carols and usually start listening to them quite early in November. My prayer for each of us this year is that, just as these songs celebrate and share the Good News of Jesus’ birth, our lives would also be testimonies of God’s love and salvation.
